William Carey: William Cary had a thirty-year career as an artist and illustrator. His work appeared in Harper’s Weekly, Leslie’s Weekly, Scribner’s and others. He traveled out west in 1861 in an ox-wagon train along the Missouri River bound for Fort Benton where he narrowed escaped being captured by the Crow Indians. He spent six weeks observing the life of the Assiniboine Indians. He took a second trip out west in 1874. He spent the rest of his life painting from the memories of his travels and his field sketches. This particular painting came out of the collection of the Denver Art Museum. It had been previously exhibited at the Texas Tech University in 1976. The painting is listed in Harmsen’s Western Americana Collection, 1978. William De La Montagne Cary has a strong auction record of $123,200 for a 9” x 21.5” painting.
