Herman Herzog-Born in Bremen, Germany November 15, 1832. He studied in Düsseldorf with Schirmer. Lessing, and Achenbach in 1849. He was in Berlin form 1867-68. He repeatedly traveled to Norway, Switzerland, Italy, and the Pyreneees , where he painting numerous mountain landscapes. He immigrated to the United States in 1869and settled in Philadelphia. He was already financially successful at the time of this move. His patrons include Queen Victoria, the Grand Duke Alexander of Russia, and other royalty. In 1873, he made his first trip out West. He is known for his landscapes and mountains. At the time of his death in 1932, his estate contained about 1000 works. He has works in museums all over the country and in Germany. His auction record is strong with a range $57,500 for a 63" x 52" oil, to $1,650 for an 8" x 11" watercolor.
